What is Bidirectional EV Charging?

How your car battery can power your house too.

A standard EV charger sends power one way, from the grid (or your solar panels) to your vehicle’s battery. A bidirectional charger allows power from your vehicle’s battery to flow back out and provide power to your house or even charge other EV’s.

Bidirectional charging is about more than just charging your EV. It turns your EV into a flexible power source that can power your home, get more value from your solar and support wider grid stability.

Benefits of a bidirectional charger:

Maximise your solar to power your home at night.

Provide backup power in outages or emergencies.

Further reducing energy bills.

Considerations for bidirectional charging:

This is a new capability and only some EV’s and chargers support the new technology at the moment.

Some brands are still working through how their warranties and software incorporate bidirectional capability.

While it’s important to consider battery wear, EV manufacturers like Ford and BYD have said that with normal well-managed charging they have no concerns.

Bidirectional charging offers greater flexibility and even more independence from the grid. By selling stored solar power to the grid via your EV’s battery in peak demand periods, wholesale electricity retailers, like Amber, offer higher feed-in tariffs.

Meanwhile, grid connection rules are becoming more uniform and more EV brands are being built to support bidirectional charging.

Charging your EV

How much power does an EV actually use and how much does it cost to charge?

Mains supply

Single phase supply – Sufficient for basic chargers

Three Phase supply – Required for fast chargers

Power usage

For an easy example using round numbers, consider the Tesla Model S that has a 100kWh battery and can travel approx 500km per charge in normal city driving conditions. That’s 20kWh per 100km.

Cost to charge from the grid

Charging entirely from the grid, using the AGL ‘Smart Saver’ plan of 25c per kWh as an example. It would cost $25 to charge.

Charging from solar during the day

Your solar system will need to produce enough to cover your home usage, plus your EV charger. If your home requires a 10kW system to cover usage during the day and your EV requires approximately an additional 5kW, you’ll need a system size of approximately 20kW to cover the load without drawing from the grid.

Charging from a home battery at night

If you arrive home from work after dark and want to charge your EV using solar power generated during the day and stored in your battery, you’ll need approximately 20kWh to charge your EV overnight. If you also want to cover additional home power usage in the evening you’ll need battery storage closer to 30kWh.

However, rather than depleting your home battery charging your EV in the evening, you can consider using your home battery to power your house and scheduling your EV battery to charge overnight at off peak rates.

There’s no cutting corners when it comes to quality

Omzen takes the extra time to install EV chargers the right way, not the easy way.
