How the battery rebate is calculated:
The battery rebate is now tiered based on battery size.
The STC factor is the number used to calculate your rebate. The more STCs that apply, the bigger the rebate.
0–14 kWh:
Full rebate (100% of STC factor applies)
14–28 kWh:
60% of the STC factor applies
28–50 kWh:
15% of the STC factor applies
Above 50 kWh:
No rebate on capacity above 50 kWh
The STC factor reduces every six months. So the largest discounts are now, before the next reduction.
How does the Cheaper Home Battery Program work?
- The rebate is delivered through the existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which has supported millions of Australians in accessing rooftop solar and other technologies.
- This new battery incentive expands on that program, offering battery storage rebates not only to households, but also to small businesses and community organisations.
- Installing an eligible battery system allows the creation of “small-scale technology certificates” (STCs) with a dollar value assigned to them.
- These STCs are redeemed by your solar battery retailer and discounted off the cost of your installation.
- Every six months the STC value decreases.

Small businesses and community facilities can also access the rebate
Battery systems between 5kWh and 50kWh will qualify for the rebate
You can still install systems up to 100kWh, but the rebate will only apply to the first 50kWh

Can I get the rebate if I already have a battery?
Unfortunately, the rebate isn’t retroactive, so if your battery is already up and running, it won’t qualify.
Is the rebate automatic?
No. It is redeemed the same way as the solar panel rebates via the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
Your installer will manage this on your behalf and apply the discount to your quote and invoice.
What if I rent?
The current policy is focused on homeowners and business owners.
Can I still get the rebate if I already have solar panels?
Yes. If your solar system is already installed, you can still access the rebate by adding a compliant battery system.
Can I claim the rebate on more than one property?
Yes. The rebate eligibility relates to property addresses, not owners. You qualify for one installation per address if you own multiple properties.
Do I need to choose a specific battery brand?
Yes. The battery manufacturer and model must be on the list of approved batteries to claim an STC discount.
What does VPP-ready mean?
It means the battery is technically capable of connecting to a Virtual Power Plant. It does not mean that you must connect it to a VPP.
A VPP allows stored energy to be shared back to the grid. However, participation in a VPP is optional and not required to receive the Solar Battery Rebate.
How long will the rebate be available?
The program aims to support over 2 million battery installations by 2030, but funding is limited and the program has been extremely popular. We recommend early action to ensure the largest discount.
